apple blossom

One of my two apple trees (Elstar) has only a few flowers this year, while the neighbouring Discovery is fully blossoming. I gave both them some potash in Nov. and in March, and both also some stable manure. What went wrong?

‘Elstar’ is predisposed to biennial bearing, or ‘on-and-off’ years. ‘Discovery’ is not.

The tree over-exerts in the on year and rests in the off year. You should thin the fruit in the on-year to help reduce the peak and trough.

Do not use stable manure or farmyard manure on apple trees as it encourages canker and apple scab disease.
