Bamboo

Rachel Byrne asked 13 years ago

We have recently laid a patio. Along one side is a fence where we have made room for a flower bed. I would like to plant Phyllostachys Aurea – Golden Bamboo. Can you please advise if this is a hardy bamboo, if roots will travel and how far apart should I plant them?

Phyllostachys is hardy and spreads to make a big clump but slowly and unwanted shoots can be cut away.

If you want a screen of plants, plant about 80-90cm apart, or perhaps better to plant one or two plants and to fill in with other shrubs and flowers. Bamboo on its own can be a bit dull and all your eggs are in the one basket should problems arise.
