Blackthorn Hedge

Janelle O\’Callaghan asked 15 years ago

Gerry, Boundary hedge is a blackthorn hedge. What would you suggest for trying to stop it growing in to garden as it is growing very strong and can be hard to cut back every year. Would like to put a mixed border inside the hedge but not sure what would grow considering the blackthorn will continue to grow inwards.

Blackthorn has a suckering habit and you will have persistent problems over the years as it tries to invade a flower bed.. You can only cut through the suckers by digging down with a spade and you may need to cut back the top as well.

The other alternative is to take out the blackthorn and plant hawthorn instead .. which does not sucker.
