Cauliflower discolouration

Dolan asked 15 years ago

I have cauliflowers planted out from trays, in a newly created garden from a lawn, in early May.The leaves look healthy but the cauliflower is going discolored with green and pink. This appeared early in the growth of the cauliflower. Most plants are affected.

If cauliflfowers formed a curd early, it sounds like they have ‘buttoned’ which means they flowered early due to a shock. This can be caused by harsh weather or disruption at planting, or stunting prior to planting.

Curds should not form until the leaves are quite large and then the leaves of most varieties will almost cover the flowers and keep the light off, which tends to make them yellow and greenish, and sometimes pink-tinged too.
