Classroom gardening with kids

Linda Leavy asked 14 years ago

I have a group of 10 boys aged 10 – 13 years who are interested in gardening. I want to know what the best seeds/bulbs to pot at this time of the year. The pots will need to be kept indoors at all time. I would prefer something with a flower so they can see the results.

It is tricky to grow much indoors but it can be done. Adequate light is the problem. You can try sunflowers, broad beans, peas, nasturtiums, clarkia, candytuft, dahlia, nemesia and thunbergia. Some of these might flower before the end of school term.

If you want more information about school gardening and environmental prgrammes, you should contact Paddy Madden at the Marino Institute of Education, Dublin, as he has done a lot of work on this over the years.
