climbers in containers

Noel O Neill asked 16 years ago

Hi Gerry, I would like to grow some climbers (Boston Ivy or Virgina Creeper with Varigated Ivy ) to climb up a trelis and cover the front of a Garage wall.I will need to grow these in a timber rectangular box I intend to make…. question is… how deep would the box need to be for these climbers, I am thinking 18″ deep by about 12″ wide….would that be big enough to support these climbers ?… thanks !!

Sorry to be blunt … not a hope!

To support these climbers for more than a year or two you would really want about one cubic metre, and this is to be found ready supplied under the tarmac or concrete at the foot of the garage wall.

Save yourself the bother of making a box, and instead hire a Kango hammer in  a hire shop and cut a small hole, say 30 cms by 20cm in the surface paving.

Remove the hardcore and rubble down to soil. Fill the hole with soil, leaving room to plant and top-up. Water well and again in two weeks. Planting through the concrete saves you all that watering of the proposed boxes for decades to come!
