concrete or sandstone paving?

jennifer byrne asked 15 years ago

Gerry,We are laying a patio of about 100sqm and given its size are trying to keep price at reasonable level. Want to achieve the look of yellow sandstone paving and have seen dyded concrete paving slabs which look great but are worried about the colour fading over time (even though would seal it every 5 yrs). Wondered if you had any experience of how these concrete slabs age over time (colour wise). Maybe better off paying extra for natural sandstone?(double the price) Thanks .

All kinds of paving, both concrete and natural stone tend to fade in time. Paving also tends to age with algal growth and lichens, These are part of the patina of age. Paving can be cleaned every so often and refreshed but old paving has its charm too.

Natural stone suits some settings and concrete suits others. Price is a factor but the expensive choice is not necessarily the best for the setting.

If you want yellow sandstone, then only yellow sandstone will do … and remember, it fades too.
