conifer problem

Alan Stenson asked 11 years ago

I got/rescued this conifer from a nursery about 3 or 4 years ago. It was neglected and growing in a bit of peat. it didnt even have a pot on its roots. It is planted in my garden since. Worries me a bit as i dont know if its growing or not- i think it is a slow growing one anyway but the base is fairly brown. The trunk under the bark in fairness is quite green and the tips of the growth looks like there is new growth does it look healthy? after rescuing it i would love to see it doing well-its about 3 ft

This conifer is showing signs of hardship and has most likely not rooted much into the surrounding soil, and so it is just hanging on.

Push a digging fork into the soil to open the soil around it slightly, not going near roots.

Then mulch a good metre diameter with well-rotted leafmould or compost.

Water with 20 litres of water during any dry spell of more than a week’s duration.
