Cordon tomatoes

Barbara Mulcahy asked 16 years ago
Dear Gerry, I am growing Cordon tomatoes – Gardener’s Delight – (outdoors) for the first time. I am confused about what bits of the plant to “pinch out”. Could you explain what I am to do? Many Thanks for your help. Barbara Mulcahy

Cordon varieties like ‘Gardener’s Delight’ have a main stem and main growing point at the top of the stem. Stake the plants to stakes about 120cm tall, 30cm in the ground. Tie in the main stem and pinch out the side-shoots that arise from the stem.

And dont confuse flower trusses with side-shoots … it has been done.

The trusses are composed of flowers only, or flower buds, and have no leaves.
