Escallonia hedge looks dead

Dorothy Patterson asked 14 years ago

I have an escallonia hedge as a screen between my house and the next-door neighbours. It has been planted for 20 years and this is the first winter that there are no leaves on it, it is entirely “see-through” and it looks dead. There are two different varities of escallonia in the hedge, one variety only has branches left, and the few leaves that are on the other variety are a pink colour and are all falling off. Could the severe frost have killed the hedge or will it come on again?

Escallonia is not fully hardy but will re-sprout.
