Escallonia Hedge

Marion Kearns asked 16 years ago

Hi. We planted an Escallonia hedge about four years ago and its growing well. Last year during the summer the leaves got black spots and turned yellow and the hedge seemed to die. So in the autumn we cut it back to see if it would come back this year. Once we had cleaned around the bottom of the hedging this year as the summer came in the hedging took off and had lovely green healthy leaves and new growth and pink flowers started to appear. Then last night it rained and this evening we noticed that the black spots were coming back on the leaves and some of the leaves had started to turn yellow. So we are wondering should we have had sprayed it for any particular disease or bug?

This sounds like a leaf spot disease, but these cannot really be sprayed for very satisfactorily. it should rectify itself when the plants grow out.
