Flower bed shaded by high hedge

Laura O\’Connor asked 8 years ago

My front flower bed is shaded and sheltered by a tall hedge. The front yard is north-facing. What can I plant for some colour and coverage that will populate the bed nicely for the summer and maybe next year too? Would a clematis climb up the hedge with very little sun?

The problem is not just shading but the effect of roots. Try bergenia, epimedium and hellebores for permanence, and plant some bedding flowers now, such as pansies or primroses and in May, bedding begonias and busy lizzie for summer. The hadge has to be clipped and the climber would be in the way.
