For year round plants, you need to use a mixture non-woody perennial flowers and shrubs.

A few shrubs give bulk and permanence to a bed or border and these can be planted around with perennial flowers. It can be useful to use some spring and summer bedding in a few groupings to give seasonal colour and also spring bulbs.

The bedding is especially useful to fill space in the early years as other plants make size.

Few plants give colour all year round … phormium and astilbe are two, both damaged by frost in the very severe weather.

After that, the choice is a personal one … check out our Plant finder: https://gardenie.wpengine.com/plant-finder

and visit garden centres at different times of year to see what you might like.
