Garden looking out over Galway Bay

kathy brady asked 14 years ago
I have recently purchased a site on the water’s edge in galway with planning. We plan on starting works in 4 weeks. Would you be able to advise me on what type of trees and shrubs to plant that would be everygreen and very hardy for the high winds from the sea. Id like to get started on planting the site as soon as possible.

Much depends on the space available but there are plenty of trees, shrubs and other plant for coastal planting.

First establish the outer defences, using the more robust kinds and then plant behind the shelter.

Good first line of defence plants include: pine, sycamore, olearia, Japanese spindle, griselinia and holly.

If you search our Plant finder under Shelter needs: tolerates strong exposure you will find more suggestions.
