growing onions in a polytunnel

I am growing onions in a polytunnel but the stalks are shooting up way too fast and starting to fall over. Is there any way to slow this growth?

Onions respond to the extra heat by growing longer leaves and might flop over but onions usually continue to grow when leaves have toppled.

You can slow growth a little by not watering as much, but left too dry, the onions may go to seed and not form a bulb at all.

Onions do not need the heat of a greenhouse, only to start off seeds, if you wish, and the seedlings are planted out.
