Home compost

Richard Conway asked 15 years ago

Hi Gerry, I have been composting my garden waste regularly but wonder if I am using it properly. I used 6 month-old compost for young strawberries last year but with very poor results. I wonder if the compost was too strong ?. Should I mix it with soil, sand etc.. before use ?.

Garden compost would be too rich for strawberries, making them too vigorous and leafy and not flower or fruit well. A small amount could be mixed with soil, especially light soil but generally it would not be much used with strawberries. It is more suitable for rasapberries, blackcurrants and rhubarb, not apples or pears.
