how to transplant ferns

mary tiernan asked 16 years ago

There is mature woodland on two sides of my garden with an abundance of ferns growing. I would like to transplant a small number of (mature) ferns into a shady bank inside my garden and was wondering if they can withstand tranplanting and whst is the best way to do this? (when etc)

It is prohibited to take any plant material from the countryside. If not State-owned, the woodland is privately owned.

In any case, mature ferns do not transplant very well.

If conditions in your garden are favourable, ferns will arrive all by themselves and there are very attractive ferns available to buy in pots.
