Lawn maintenance

fons jaspers asked 16 years ago

Gerry, in your ‘lawn’ pages there is nothing about airing the lawn. Is that something that is not needed, or not necessary or perhaps even damageing? What machinery is used (the surface of my lawn is too large for forking):Real aerators (making holes) are hard to get around here. Another tool might be a ‘scarifier’ (making cuts through the sod), or is there some other? Thanks , Fons

There is no mention of aeration because it is not really necessary for a home garden. Earthworms do the aeration on most lawns.

If you want a fine lawn, golf green style, it might be useful. Scarifying is useful for removing dead moss and old thatch but it is not essential. The scarifier should be set to rip just to soil surface, otherwise it will rip out living grass as well.
