Magnolia Susan

Carmel Keenan asked 13 years ago

We sowed a magnolia Susan ten years ago. It took a long time to flower but this year it was beautiful. However during the winter a large branch was broken in the wind. It has left the tree very lob-sided. I want to cut off a lower branch to balance it up but not sure how or when to do this. Any suggestions?

You can cut off branches or gently tie in branches to fill gaps, and this can be done in May, or June if not done earlier.

When pruning magnolia, cut out whole branches, or parts of branches, to where the branch arises. Do not cut halfway along a branch. If you study the branch framework, it will suggest where to cut.
