Magnolia Tree

Pauline O\’Reilly asked 11 years ago

I planted a Magnolia Tree in Spring 2009. It went in in blossom and blossomed 2010 & 2011. In 2012 & this year it only produced two or three blossoms. The tree appears to be extremely healthy however, I have under-planted it with spring bulbs and sweet William for the summer. Is this the problem? Do I need to remove them?

Sometimes trees can flower in the early years, because of the restriction of the pot, but then grow away strongly in the open soil and reduce flowering for a few years, while they make a framework of branches, but return to flowering later.

Magnolia will do best without competing plants, just mulched , but spring bulbs would not offer enough competition to cause a problem. However root disturbance is to be avoided.
