Moving established trees

Caroline Gleeson asked 13 years ago

Is it possible to move established conifer trees. I have a number of large conifers in my garden which are now blocking my beautiful view and I would like to relocate them in our garden. The trees are mature in that they have been planted for approx 8 years and are now in the region of 15 to 20 high. Do you know any companies in ireland that carry out successful tree repositioning. Any assistance would be appreciated. I do not just want to cut the trees down as a large house has been built adjacent to us and the trees can be used to screen this.

It is very difficult to move established conifers of that size. It is done in nurseries but the trees are moved every few years to create a compact root ball. The strong likelihood is that they would die.

You could consider letting them grow, some of them at least, and pruning off the lower branches as they get taller, thereby getting back the space at ground level while maintaining the screening tops.

This might provide a temporary or partial solution while you plant other trees where you need them.
