my standard jap azalea

my standard japanese azalea was a mass of flowers this year but after the blooms went it seems to have died the leaves are brown. Its about 4 year old growing in a container. will it come back or why did it go like that?

The most likley explanation is that it simply dried out at the root and collapsed. At 4 years, it would fill the pot and be more inclined to dry out.

If it did not dry out, it is likely that a root rot affected the roots. This can occur shortly after flowering because the plant is weakened by flowering and is overcome by the root rot that might have been there for some time.

It is unlikely to come back but give it a month or so and see if some new shoots appear.
