october glory

Alan Stenson asked 14 years ago

I planted this october glory last autumn as i thought it looked really stunning and thankfully it turned out to be however i just noticed this gash in the trunk. i think the bamboo cane that it was attached to was rubbing against it and caused the gashit hasn’t affected the crown of the tree so far but i’m hoping it will not cause any long lasting damage as the trunk gets thicker with age, can i do anything with it, fill it with anything?

The red maple, Acer rubrum ‘October Glory’, is a very handsome tree.

The damage appears to have had some bit of fungal activity, but this should resolve itself. The best thing to do is to gently tease away any loose bark to allow air movement and hopefully there is new wound tissue developing that will soon close the wound.

Packing with anything can cause more problems.
