The fremontodendron is native to southern California and Mexico. It likes well-drained soil in a bright sunny position. It is not related to rhododenron.

The ‘dendron’ part of the name is Greek for a tree and the fremont part is in honour of an explorer of North America called Major Charles Fremont.
