I wish to plant a laurel or holly hedge along a post and rail fence, The area is already in grass, What is the best way to prepare the ground for planting?

Control the grass by covering with black plastic or old carpet, or by spraying with Roundup in a strip of one metre wide. Plant directly into the dead sod.
