I would like to plant both climbers in one large clay pot circa 17″ diameter and 17″ high. North facing wall at my front door with canopy and wall trellis. Will they work planted in the same pot and is that size pot adequate for healthy growth

Climbers in pots works only for a few years until the plants, even sinlge plants, run out of root space. For climbers, remove a small area of paving and plant into the soil, removing hardcore or rubble underneath. 

Also pots need regular watering and if this is missed, they suffer.
