Planting under conifer

Brenda Dolan asked 16 years ago

Hi Gerry – I have a tall pine tree/conifer in my garden which gets the sun for most of the day (west facing)and the area underneath is very dry with pine needles. Is there anythng I can plant under it ? I have a preference for bulbs or perennial. Thank you

The soil under a big pine tree is filled with roots and it is difficult to get anything going, but you could try the following Euphorbia robbiae, Geranium macrorhizum, Lamium galeobdolon, Libertia and Sedum roseum. Water these regularly to get them established but they should be able to cope after that, except during a prolonged dry spell.

Bulbs to try for spring include daffodils and crocuses, and Cyclamen hederifolium, which flower in autumn, do well too.
