poorly prickly heath

finola mullins asked 13 years ago

I planted some prickly heath shrubs last year and the winter has played havoc with them, 2 are dead but the rest are savageable (i think). they may have been too small when i planted them out. can you please recommend something that may encourage revival, some are not too bad but some only have a small bit of foliage.

Prickly heath is a common name for pernettya, now called Gaultheria mucronata. It is hardy but may suffer in very hard frost, especially if the plants, like yours, were small and soft.

Keep them free of weeds and simply allow them to recover at their own pace, Water if there is a spell of more than 5 days dry.
