I have a gunnera growing which dies back in the winter. Is there any way of protecting it in the winter?

Gunnera always dies back as soon as the first hard frost hits. It comes again from the large buds and you can helpt to protect these with any loose plant material, such as straw or leaves. But generally this is not necessary.
