I have an old but beautiful rose on the south side of my house – my problem is that the house is going to be painted this summer and I will have to prune the rose back to its base – how can I do this and not lose this rose

Rambling rose stems are remarkably flexible and it might be possible to untie the rose and lean, at least some of the main stems, away from the wall to allow painting.

If this does not work, the whole plant can be cut to ground level and this could be done now and the plant allowed to re-grow during summer, tying back the stems to a stake, and after painting, tie them to supports on the wall.
