pruning rose tree

Patricia Grace asked 15 years ago

Hi Gerry, I am just back in the country and need to know is it too late to prune a rose tree. There is new growth and stands at about 8 foot all the new growth is at the top of the tree. I prune every year in early Spring to about 3 feet and it always performs very well. Your advice would be appreciated. Pats

This sounds like a vigorous rose bush that has grown too large over the years. Mostly rose bushes are pruned back to within 30cm of the ground. It is late in mid-APril to be pruning as growth has started and flowering will be delayed, but it is still better to do so.

Cut out one, two or three old shoots very low down to encourage new growth and the rest asas far down as you can. The 3-foot shoots should be all pruned out over a period of two springs to make the bush smaller.
