Im replacing my badly frost damaged grysellania hedge with laurel. Do i need to take up all the roots or can i just cut down to ground level before i plant?

Just cut the dead plants to ground level and plant in the gaps. The old roots will rot away in a few years and laurel is a woodland plant, well adapted to old roots in the soil.
