Replanting a lilac bush

I’ve a syringa vulgaris lilac bush that is not in great soil. While its healthy, its struggling to grow. I have it about 5 years and want to transplant it to a better area. It’s nearly 4ft tall. Would replanting damage it and do you know what type of soil would be best? I’d like to do it now that the flowers have died off. Thanks!
