Seedlings/Seed Tray Moss

darren clinton asked 15 years ago

Hi Gerry, I planted a number of seeds trays two weeks ago today, and made the error of re-using some potting compost that I had in other trays that I used over winter, which had developted an algae/moss growth on top. As a result, a number of my trays contain the re-appearance of this alage like growth. The trays contain Lobelia and Antherinthums with another containning Geraniums. The Lobelia, sowed on surface, appear to be germinating. However, Im not sure how the algae growth will affect them, or with future watering what will happen. Can you advise Thanks Darren

Old compost generally has plenty of moss spores and algae. Not much you can do, keep the watering to a minimum and prick out the seedlings as soon as possible.
