small potatoes

sheila walsh asked 15 years ago

Potatoes(Queens) have been very small this year. some stalks have very little under them. need to dig a few stalks for dinner. potatoes are lovely and floury. 2nd year growing spuds here. put in farmyard manure before setting, then after few weeks added organic fertiliser. trying to use as little chemicals as possible. any suggestions for next year?

Farmyard manure and ‘organic fertiliser’ should do the trick as small potato size is usually a lack of feeding.

It is possible that if the manure was relatively fresh, it may not have released much nutrients and indeed can even reduce nitrogen in the soil until it rots.

It is possible that blight took the foliage before the tubers had bulked up.

It is possible, though unlikely, that the soil was too well-drained and dry.

It is possible though unlikely that eelworms have affected the vigour of the crop … the stalks would be small and weak.
