Strawberry Plants

Ray Dunford asked 15 years ago

When my stawbwerry plants have finished for the season and they start to dry up & wither, is it ok to leave the pots as they are out in the open for the winter OR, do they need to be in a shed/ sheltered area? If it’s the latter, when can I take them out of the shed /sheltered area for next year?

Strawberries are outdoor plants, except when they are brought into a greenhouse to fruit early, in April, which is called forcing.

In pots, they should not be allowed to dry out and wither completely as they are an evergreen plant, losing older leaves.

Generally, the old foliage and runners can be cut away in July and new leaves will emerge for autumn/winter.
