I recently bought a travertine statue for the garden. (How) Should I cover it in winter?

Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by warm water springs. It is porous and relativley soft but durable enough to be left outdoors. Because it is porous it will tend to stain easily and this might be looked on as a good or bad thing.
