Trimming laurel hedge

Laurel hedge, planted 5 years age, 12ft hi, never trimmed on top, want to grow another 3ft high, worried that bottom of hedge will will start to go bare, should I trim top to prevent this?

Laurel tends to make a rounded bush and will belly out, but as long as there is light reaching it, it will stay furnished.

Any hedge should be trimmed to shape and should be a narrow A-shape in cross-section., trimming the sides to prevent it cgettign too wide and allowing the top to grow, but the top too should get some trimming to encourage it to thicken up.
