Weeds can be taken away by scuffling with a spade, or by covering with some material to exclude light, or by using Roundup, making sure not to get Roundup on the stems or foliage of the hedging plants.

It is important to remove weeds from under new hedging to encourage growth. Clear a strip up to 50cm on each side.
