willow disease

anne parkinson asked 13 years ago

My two new golden weeping willows are showing all the signs of willow canker. The leaves went black canker on the stems die back. Is it worth trying to spray them with fungicide or am I wasting my time?

Willow canker is very destructive and spraying is at best a partial solution. There is a big question mark over this plant, especially in a sheltered spot or where ait can be moist.

The true Salix babylonica is largely immune to this disease, but the naming of plants can be mixed up in the trade and the best way to be sure is to propagate from disease-free trees, which can be done from cuttings in autumn.
