Yellow leaves on potatoes

Philip Cullinane asked 15 years ago

Planted Sarpo miras over 8- 10 wks ago , first time on this soil. Have noticed yellow leaves onthem for the last 10 days or so. What has gone wrong , do you think? I have only used farmyard manure in very small doses.

That means you planted in early May, which is quite late. If the leaves have yellowed it probably means they are gone a little dry at the roots which can happen with potatoes. Although we have had rain in recent days, the soil was quite dry underneath and the yellowing happened some time ago and may rectify itself now.

Another possibility if you think the soil has been adequately supplied with moisture is the nutritition of the plants. Farmyard manure is fine but it must not be too fresh or it can cause problems.
