Month: April 2014

This one has pale cream flowers which stand out against the dark purpleish green glossy foliage and has Polyanthus type flowers held clear of the leaves.

I’m struggling to find space to sow any seeds.  That’s why I’ve put peas and cosmos together, and some tall sunflowers.  I have no room elsewhere and I love to see flowers growing.  I know my vegetables taste good because the slugs absolutely adore them.  Of course everyone knows that they only like the best!  I found a bit of space in front of a small ceanothus (California lilac) and between small crocosmias and put yellow annual seeds in there.

This morning we’ve been taking the wire out of the old aviary (a grand name for a birdhouse). I know that when my husband builds something he always says it will never fall down – and what a job I’ve had taking all the staples out so he can reuse the wire in the new one.

The gate has been open most of the time, so the hen and duck have been in and out, Ive been putting them in, the duck has been quacking her head off because the hen has gone off without her, the cat’s got into the other part of the bird house and has been climbing up the wire and the birds have been giving out hell!

We’ve just had dinner so we’re going back out to continue.

I am trying to finish planting the new Lasagne Border but it’s taking longer than anticipated. Today rain called a halt to proceedings. Then it stopped so I went out and dug some more holes.

I’ve positioned all the plants on the border and am digging the holes for them and then I’ll plant all in one go with a nice compost and manure mix.

I would have finished the holes too except I remembered the arisaema. The plan had been to put them in and I nearly forgot!

So I went and found them and postioned them and dug a few more holes in the drizzle and then it started coming down good-o so I went in.

On Sunday I took a mad propagating fit, trying all kinds of things and hoping they’ll strike. That reminds me, I’d better go check their moisture levels!

The photo shows Rhododendron ‘Virginia Richards’. It is just coming into flower. I bought this one for its particular colour because it was in flower when I bought it. In front of the rhodo is a plant I thought I’d lost – Japanese Parsley or Cryptotaenia japonica f. atropurpurea. And it is alive and well.

I have just uploaded my April album. Its taken me only a couple of minutes to upload that amount of photos. All that because we changed our broadband to FIBRE broadband. I cant believe the difference. Before we changed it could take anything up to an hour to upload them. This is done in minutes…amazing…so if anyone has a problem with speed, fibre is the way to go 😉

Hasnt the weather been amazing, well until today that is, then the rain came down, as it does.

But the difference in the garden from last month is amazing. I have spent as much time in the garden as I can and am loving every minute of it. Last night the smell in the garden was lovely, that real Summery smell.

Today I potted on some of my seedlings. I never know which ones to single out when Im sorting out the weak ones. I feel so guilty because who knows maybe the weak ones will be the strong ones if left alone!!!….anyway I had to be ruthless and get rid of some of them.

I will have my grand-daughters for the next two days so not much will be done in the garden. But Im hoping that the weather will improve over the weekend and it will be back to business again 😉
