Month: August 2014

In God’s good time down came the rain,

And all the afternoon,

On iron roof and window pane,

It drummed a homely tune,

And through the night it pattered still,

ans lightsome gradsome elves,

On dripping spout and window cill,

Kept talking to themselves.

It pelted, pelted all day long,

A singing at its work,

‘Till everyone took up the song,

‘Way back to Back O Burke,

And every creek a banker rang,

And dams filled overtop.

We’ll all be rooned, said Hanrahan,

If this rain doesn’t stop.

I think it will to morrow. Plants will stand up again. No need for watering. I was looking at shrubs like Hydrangeas which love water and they are looking great again. Now I also have a chance to do some indoor work and perhaps read the Irish Garden.

Sorry,  I can never manage to upload 3 pictures!

Orangeish butterfly

Hi there,

Now that has been a very nice summer indeed! Two summers in a row!  Could I please ask you help in identifying two butterflies that like my lavender?  The one I think is fairly common (the orangish one). I’d usually have loads of them in the garden, but this year I don’t have nearly as many.  The white/yellow one isn’t as common.  Are they moths?

I am planning on adding more plants to the garden next year that would attract butterflies throughout the summer.  It is a bit of a process, creating these gardens.

The vegetable garden didn’t get the attention it needed this year.  But the few items I did grow seem to be doing well: peas, beet root, garlic, and potatoes.

I have ventured out on facebook and found a few other lovely gardening sites.  If I can’t get to the gardens, it is at least nice to see the pictures of them on facebook!

Thanks for your help with the butterflies!

I always think that Nigella (Love-in-a-mist) seed pods look just like gooseberries.

Now who was it that wanted all this rain! It has lashed down all night and I have a skip to fill today. Enough!

Wow, look at this amazing offer! A fantastic range of perennials at half price. This is a great opportunity to plug those gaps in the borders! I popped into this nursery yesterday and I can vouch for the great range of plants available and the sale prices are starting as low as €1.50! €3 will buy you a large perennial in a 2 litre pot. WOW! But hurry, the offer is only lasting 10 days! Aherns nursery is only 2miles from me, just off the Bruff to Kilmallock road in Co. Limerick
