Month: October 2014

…………. you are been watched,

no matter where you are!!

Cuphea cyanea

Went and looked at my Fatsia after seeing the journals about flower buds and wonder would this be one too as looks different to a new leaf forming. Hope it is as it would be a nice bonus and it’s in it’s 3rd year here

Last Gardener’s World of the season @ 9.30 BBC 2 this evening,

be there or be square LOL

Enjoy 🙂

Just because it’s Halloween, here’s a little fun!

Guess how many sweets are in this jar and win a selection of my plant seeds.

There will be only one winner so the first person to guess the correct number before midnight will be victorious.

Good luck!

Wishing all garden.iers a happy, spooky, scary weekend.  Enjoy it, whatever you get up to.

This little thing won’t frighten any young visitors … but I couldn’t resist it!

just back from hols, really enjoyed the whole experience. spent a glorious day in wakehurst place not anything like kew mostly woodland and the seed bank and sculptures but very enjoyable all the same. came home with 7 gardening books from my hols 3 from wakehurst and 4 for dobbies garden centre……i have no interest in clothes shopping at all just garden shopping….thats me sorted can never have enough garden books it will keep me busy over winter plus the planning of a few new areas for my garden. we also did the tour of london including the london eye bucking ham palace and big ben and tower of london where we say the crown jewels and the display of poppies for the war memorial

i have decided to turn serenity cove into a japanese area, my bamboos and acers will be planted into the boxes and the other shrubs will be put out in the new areas out front. i will hopefully have a small water feature, it was the original plan for the area but i got sidetracked so it is back to the original plan, i was watching a garden program on bbc last week BIG DREAMS small garden and they did a gorgous one

i am putting up some photos of wakehurst and the poppy display

im already planning my next trip over to see wisley and great dixter in spring

Its taken time to get back into the garden, but lots have been done this week cutting back and cleaning off beds. the Peppers in the tunnel are still fruiting well.Im amazed how nice the Fucsias are staying on in flower giving coulor to the garden when most things have gone over.

You’re a Christmas cactus, you’re not allowed to start flowering until after Hallowe’en! Its red companion in the lounge flowered in November last and was still in flower in June.

Out and about this afternoon and saw the first of the Poinsettias for sale in Homebase. It drives me nuts seeing Christmas things for sale earlier and earlier every year. It took at least 15 minutes to actually get out of the carpark and onto the main road. I reckon the first of the Christmas shoppers were out in full force today.

Right, that’s it! Morning shopping ONLY for me from now on.

Spent Dahlia

No, I’m not away anywhere more exciting than my own garden! But with weather like this I am very happy to have spent the afternoon in the garden.

I cut the remaining heads off my Vancouver and brought them inside to enjoy. Then I dug up one of the plants and it is now in the shed for the winter, the second one will hopefully get done tomorrow.

I moved a couple of things and planted in a pittosporum which I had bought for 3 Euro! in the summer. I am aiming to have less perrenials and more evergreen plants in the hope that it will be less work! I heard some one on a gardening program recently saying you should have a 3rd of your plants evergreen, so I am going to try to do that.

I enjoyed my day in my own garden, Vancouver will have to wait!

Dahlia 'Vancouver'

Jackie and Rachel recently did journals about their Fatsia producing flower buds.

I spotted his on mine today, is this a flower bud?

with the secateurs first thing this morning produced a nice vase of flowers. Without a doubt, the last one of the year.

For the end of October it’s a ‘blooming’ good show.

October Blooms

I know that Elizabeth is very fond of Nigel and I came upon this  photo on FB this morning and I thought she might like it as I think he is looking very well. The photo was to advertise that Bodnant Gardens are allowing people to walk their dogs in the gardens at certain times on certain days from now until February.

When a few of us met up at Mount Usher a few weeks back I spotted and fell for a lovely Wind Mobile.

As my birthday was fast approching I not only dropped hints, I plastered them on the floor, walls and ceilings here abouts, but to no avail, things had already been sorted.

So it went on my long wish list, untill today………

A phone call from Pearse St Garda station saying, that a wallet that I found and handed in over a year ago had not been claimed by it’s owner and was now mine.

So when I collect it next week, it will be followed by a trip back to Mount Usher ;))

Just enough money left over to treat the Ladies in my life to a coffee and cake.

Very Happy Days

LOL

Wind Mobile

I have been waiting a long time for this one to open. Worth the wait. Fantastic scent.

Its great to be back and Iam sure I missed loads? All services were damaged recently by a local bridge construction and I had no email phone etc since 10 Oct !!

Unbelievable what has been done since. People Power and we achieved a new Eircom upgrade to all eircom customers in our area. Why I was even made Chairman of the local community activists!!

Now looking forward to catching up with everyone as I missed the daily blogs..

Declan

Here’s a close up of Hedychium greenei, which is just coming into flower now and as mentioned two journals ago.

A single rogue delphium, in full flower 😀

And Gadioli are still opening,

crazy,

but great to see.

thought id share this one flowering in the garden at the moment!

Bought it 2 years ago forgot the name its some type of Herb lemon scent. Was thinking verbena but it doesnt look like it. Any help would be great.

Hour back, spirits down for a couple of months so time to imagine.

So there is a knock at the door and you have won €2000 that has to be spent on the garden.  Anything plants, equipment etc , new design.  Photos to illustrate what you may evisage , Google job!!

It may be too much work but maybe we could price it as much as possible via , once again good ole Google. For example I would buy some big pots and will find out where and price and tell you. So if we give ourselves say a couple of weeks to research it and then tell  it might be helpful to hear prices of various items and where to get them in case you too like them. Should we decrease or increase the money allowance?

Shall not be a bit offended if you think it a daft idea …being a bit daft I am going to do it anyway as I badly need to keep in the gardening mode. I should hope to get a few of the smaller items I select.

I have got so much pleasure out of all the lovely Autumn albums posted recently that I just feel I have to say a big THANK YOU to all the people who took the trouble to share them with us.

I find the darkening evenings very depressing and once the clocks go back I start a mental countdown to when they are changed again in March. Talk about wishing your life away!

And the recent windy weather doesn’t suit me either!

So now I’m finished moaning – I’m thankful I have my little greenhouse where I spent a happy few hours potting up some Fuchsia cuttings and starting to bring in those that aren’t very hardy.

And of course, there’s the new leaf-blower that will need to come out again next week or so when the rest of the leaves have fallen!

And I have a Birthday Party of a very special little lady to attend on Halloween LOL

I fear for this outside tonight as the wind is just roaring …..I know it should have been cut back at this stage but I love it and I will miss it looking out the kitchen window ….

My neighbour got me up a ladder today and was wondering why …..well I could see into his garden as I was measuring  how tall this was this year   and yes it is much taller this year by 7 inches …..it is 9 ft 10 inches ……………a biggie .

I planted my new Sassafras tree today.

I only bought it a month ago so that’s good going for me. But I don’t like to have trees knocking around unplanted for two long, especially not going into winter.

Of course there was a good half hour wasted trying to locate the mycorrhizal fungus but it’s planted now.

And there was some work done in the greenhouse too, drilling a hole and digging in plants.
