Month: November 2014

During my walk yesterday I spotted this oak tree with lots of unripened acorns – something I haven’t seen up close and personal before.

I knew they were edible, but didn’t realise that they contain a lot of tannin acid which is not very palatable. And the amounts of tannin they contain depend on the type of oak that they come from. They take a bit of time and preparation before they are suitable for eating. I reckon I might leave them for the squirrels and rats, who normally gather them from the ground. Very interesting looking nut though!
