Month: January 2015

Isn’t it funny how the plants you’re not keen on can change over time?

You come across one that looks interesting or catches your attention in one way or another. Then, suddenly, a whole world of new species and cultivars opens up to you that you’ve been ignoring with your blinkered vision for years.

Clematis are one group that I’ve suddenly started dabbling in (not excessively, baby steps), especially since buying ‘Viennetta’ this summer.

She’s a bit lovely isn’t she?

Ginger nut to be more precise.  I think I will be able to make a contract with Jacobs this year.  Lovely day here so went weeding. Also my Hedychium gardnerianum, I think, has now been overtaken by the Tetrapanax so needed moving. It flowered so little that the move might have been towards the compost but as I dug I was amazed to see the number of rhizomes big juicy ones. So I now have a heap of ginger under cover for the moment until the big Jacob’s lorry arrives to take it away~!!!  Seriously I think I will give it another chance in a different location. I had a lovely sunny spot in mind until I read that they liked shade…..now that surprised me…….and damp soil. I am almost sure I have seen this grow in full sun???

As for the Tetrapanax there are loads of babies sprouting up and for fun I think I will leave them and see if I can have a Tetrapanax forest.

Im just wondering if anyone else if having problems with notifications from the site.

Im getting no emails for the past couple of weeks and its driving me insane. I thought it because of the problem with the site. So now I have to go back into each journal I commented on to see what else has been said.

So apologies to anyone who may have posted a comment on any of my journals and I havent responded…..

Im hoping its just to do with the site acting up……..I do remember this happening last year too, so maybe once the holidays are over it will be business as usual!

Fingers crossed!

To day was so mild you could hardly feel it was January. It must be a long time since we had it so mild. Of course we had rain and wind but at times it was possible to do some gardening. In the afternoon, i got at the roses again and of the 100, I have one third done. I was at no. 35 when I decided to move in. earlier on , I was at Woodies and even though it was a bank holiday, the store was open though very few shopping. I bought some nuts for the birds and then looked for seeds, tomatoes and flowers ach mo léan ní raibh siad le fáil. I enquired at the check out about seeds and the lady at the check out called one of the men. Both seemed to think that they were there but then, what do you think, they were thinking of BIRD SEED, not the ones I wanted. it reminded me of a case some years ago when I went to shop at Quinnsworth and enquired about roses but the lady thought I was talking about chocolates. On another occasion in Woodies, I enquired about bulbs. I was directed to the electrical area.  What do you think of that? Well I finished up without the seeds(tomato and flower) but I did get work done on the roses. I have the Irish garden and all I have read in it is Dick Warners article on worms, very interesting. Nothing worth while on TV. Will we ever get a programme on gardening again? By the way, when I checked the spelling on the computer, there were a few words not understood, the ones in Irish!

Flower Pot Holder

Christmas wasnt over before hubby went down with this bad cough bug. I can describe it in no other way. Not a cold and couldn’t quite be called a flu, but nasty just the same. And of course you guessed it, I now have it. Spent the morning in bed and now sitting doing nothing wrapped in a rug. Not really what you would plan for New Years Day! Moan over!

A very Happy and Healthy New Year to all my friends and hope to be recovered for our Get-together.

The site seems to not allow a cheery photo either 🙁

Spotted a page of gardening notes yesterday that I had scribbled down during the summer. One of the tasks was ” Divide Agapanthus” . Well that turned into some task. When I eventually got half the clump up I managed to divide it into ten more well rooted plants. I didn’t realise the root ball these chappiea have ! one more task off the list though. What a wet start to 2015, it can only improve . Happy new year garden friends

Dick has written on the current issue of The Irish Garden.  It is a great issue.

One of my first jobs of the year is to cut away the old hellebore leaves.  But the weather now does not encourage one to do gardening.  But I see on page 7 that around the third week in January is the time to cut away old leaves, so I have an excuse to put off this chore.

hope you all have a very happy and fruitful new year and may everything you sow grow and every project you tackle be a fantastic success.

A happy new year to all of you lovely folks from a very wet and windy Burren. Not that we’re complaining, having had the world’s best Christmas and birthday treat – last Sunday as we were getting ready to have some friends round there was a knock at the door and there were our little grandchildren! And their mum and dad, of course. Total surprise – we didn’t know they were coming over from Scotland. So we ended up having a lot of fun in the frosty garden and a walk in Coole Park on Nanny’s birthday. But the end-of-year gardening plan got a bit lost!

Shame we can’t put up any pics of the frost, it really was a picture. Never mind. We’ll soon be feeling the evenings stretching out, and before we know it spring will be on the way. I can’t wait. Three years in and the garden should be really growing up and coming into its own. Lots to look forward to!

Happy and a prosperous new year to all….see you in jan at the gathering!
