Month: July 2015

Some plants in flower at the moment.

I got this lovely Daylilly earlier in the year off Paddy & Mary called Hemerocallis ‘Stafford’ I think as I can’t find the label in amongst all the growth but really love it and started flowering this weekend. thanks again

Thrilled isn’t the word to see this flowering. 3 years and 2 plants later I have a flower and absolutley love it, perfect for that tropical/exotic look I want here. It has loads of buds so I should get a lot of flowers this year and this was bought in aldi last year so a great bargain in my eyes. Next now is to keep an eye out for the white one.

These are from my late friend Larry’s garden. Larry died early January this year and iam looking after his house and garden until it’s sold. These are clump forming , tall with lovely soft velvet like stems and leaves. A name would be nice as I’ve now planted some seedlings in my own garden. Now it’s off to Thurles for Munster final with Waterford and Limerick in the minor. No gardening today except hopefully a good yield from Semple Stadium .

Is a weed simply a plant in the wrong place. When I was a Chap these Poppy flowers were in all the meadows and roadside. Intensive agriculture finished them in farmland. They would make a great display in large numbers even if they are now considered weeds…

i have them popping up in my back driveway which is loose gravel which they appear to love. I know I’ll regret leaving some to flower .

Anyone else bothered with Hayfever today?? I am suffering lots today despite the rain and overcast conditions

About a month ago, I took cuttings from Hydrangeas. To day on removing the plastic bags, I noticed that they were well rooted. There were 17 plants rooted, 16 well rooted. These were potted.

Blarney in Bloom to day. Not a great day but headed out. It was a few years since I was there and gosh so many tempting plants and how large the show had become. I wanted Kniphofia Tawny King as I had dug up mine by mistake and managed to get one, also a lovely Dahlia Lemon yellow flower with the dark foliage, a single one. Think it may be Mystic Illusion , forgot what he told me! Also at the IGPS stand got a Fuchsia Lady Betty Boothy….wrong spelling but it is raining so not going out to check!

But best of all came from my friends.  Margaret had got me an Isoplexis when she was in Deelish…thanks so much. She knew it was on my wish list.

And I could not believe what Mary Joe had got me in the UK last week. I have been raving about Amicia zygomeris for years and unable to find one. I even had my brother when on a visit to the UK looking for it and it is probably the only plant name he will never forget and still has it written on a piece of paper in his wallet. So Mary was in Derry Watkins nursery and spotted one which she got for me. Came home in her suitcase and no plants for herself.  Still cannot believe it. Thanks loads Mary. So lucky with my ie friends.

Yesterday was a well-packed day that involved visiting not only three, but four great gardens. After our first visit, Joan had bravely invited everyone back to her place for a lovely lunch. No mean feat as there were quite a few of us. I had been looking forward to yesterday ever since Joan had suggested the outing as it has been the only group visit I’ve had in over a year. And the day certainly didn’t disappoint.

The weather was perfect, and the gardens were filled with beautiful layouts and an eye-opener compared to some of the BIG gardens I’ve visited in the past. I also was able to gain great inspiration for our new area.

Gretta came away at the end of the day feeling very much welcomed by each and every one. That means a lot to me as I think she’ll be very much inclined to go on further outings now. So thank you all for that.

But hey, Joan, you did a Trojan job, so thank YOU especially for everything!

Thank you, Joan.

In flower at the moment and just love it, It was bought last year as bulbs but never flowered but this year  it’s looking great and is a taller variety of the crocismias.

Delighted with this plant Joan kindly gave me at the January get-together. It’s called Francoa sonchifolia ‘Pink Giant’ and really like the flowers on this. Thanks again Joan.

My hydrangea have no blooms. They weren’t cut back at all but I presumed they should have some sort of florets at thus stage

I made the first of this year’s Gooseberry Jam  this evening. I got 10 lb almost out of 4 lb of fruit.

This lovely Amorphophallus Konjac has finally started shooting up above the soil and I have watered lightly twice but now i’m not sure what to do so would love some advice. thanks again for this great plant and really hope I can get it to flower eventually.

Well at least thats whZt I think they are. Took some seeds from Mums garden some time ago and grew them on . They are now clumped up and flowering about the garden. I like them and think of Mum whenever I see them .

Can anyone tell me should I deadhead the Alliums now that they are finished flowering ? I did a few today and placed them on display .

New gardening programme starting tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.

Hello,

I love to working on my garden,

For everyone coming on the south Dublin gardens mini odyssey on Friday, here is the latest information, including directions to our meeting point and a request for those of you with any plants to spare.

We meet at 10.30 am at Shirley Beatty’s Garden, 18 Waltham Terrace, Blackrock, which is off Mount Merrion Ave (long road running down from the N11 Stillorgan Road to the gates of Blackrock Park).

Coming up from the Blackrock end, go through pedestrian traffic lights, then through traffic lights at junction with Cross Ave and take first turn left into Waltham Terrace.  No.18 is about halfway down on the right.

Coming down Mt Merrion Ave from the N11, go through two traffic lights and as you approach the next lights, turn right into Waltham Terrace.  It’s a narrow road, not too easy to spot.

The good news is that the roadworks there are not starting until next week đŸ™‚  Parking is pay & display @ €1 per hour, allow 1.5 hours.

To get to Mt Merrion Ave from the M50 Southbound, exit at Jct 14 signposted N31/Stillorgan and follow N31 down past Clayton Hotel (formerly Bewleys).  At next roundabout follow N11 Dublin City Centre sign which takes you onto Brewery Road and where this meets the N11 turn left towards the city.  Just past the Stillorgan Park Hotel, turn right at traffic lights onto Mt Merrion Ave.  If anyone needs directions from other approaches please let me know.

After this visit, it’s “follow the leader” to my house for light lunch, plant swaps, and garden chat.  Then to our afternoon visits at Knockrose (2.30 pm) and Van der Lee Garden (4.00 pm).  I’ll give drivers further directions before we set off.

Attendees: Gracedieu x 2 (Mary & Paddy), Jacinta, Gretta, Jackie, Keego (Mary), Doreen, Hazel, Myrtle (& possibly Periwinkle), NoelFitz, Jemo (Brian) +1, Smurf (Helen) +1, and myself.  Fran and ClaireE hope to join us for part of the day. Entry to each of the gardens is €5 per person.

Request from Hazel for spare plants (and sure we all have a few!): any spare plants people might have that could go towards my Open Day in aid of the Laois Hospice? I have a good few plants but the more I have the better so that we can maximise the money we raise! Laois Hospice have been trying to raise the money for an actual Hospice in the Laois area for 25 years! I’d appreciate any plants in a more-or-less saleable condition!  (PS, Hazel’s Open Day is Sunday 19th July).

Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday … the weather forecast is for warm and dry in the east and here’s to an enjoyable outing!  Safe travels everyone.

Hazel's garden

Have been watching this lily for weeks now out in the front garden and got a nice surprise when it flowered as I never planted this in the front and had something similar in the back a couple of years back so thinking I must have dug a bit of it up when moving my plants from the back to the front. A lovely colour and looks well out in the front which doesn’t get much sun.

Also on another excellent note I went and checked my banana pup to see how it was doing as poppies have grown over it at the moment and when pushing back the leaves to see how ot was I discovered I now have 4 pups coming up, absolutely delighted with this and what a great clump it will be next year.

this is a great year for foxtail lilies, they love hot dry conditions being natives of asia minor, these grew yo 4m this year..the beautiful Maria is used as a scale measure!…

..after weeks of dry weather my pond has dropped about a foot, and the cursed pond weed loves it…

Good Morning all, this summer isn’t being very nice down south here, i live up high and have great views but the wind these past few days is hurricane force, flattening and knocking alot of my lovely flowering plants.

Anyway i took off to Griffins Garden Centre one day last week with my daughter as she wanted a teapot from there and i make my beeline to the garden centre and found this lovely phlox, its very pretty, does anyone else have this or similar or different colours? I wish you all a good day, its somewhat dry i think today here for a change, so will head out to my grove and clean it up.

Peppermint Twist Phlox

That little Clematis that I got from Deborah is taking its time coming out … I’m watching it each day, and the suspense is killing me!

So today I saw that the first bud is starting to open …. maybe tomorrow I’ll see the true colour ….

This is the Euphorbia now it stands at about 4ft and is a lovely lime green, This is a really lovely plant from the time the new growth emerges

I think due to my lack of watering of this plant last year that there wasn’t one single flower on it this year. It was totally my fault as I placed the plant in a slightly out of the way position.

But it’s a real case of lesson learnt and it’s looking great now so full of hope for this one for next year.
