Month: January 2018

Unfortunately my internet is not working so I’m relying on my phone at present I should be back online Wed/Thurs. so can’t upload photos or journals etc.

But after reading Frans journal and his annoyance at the constant problems with the site, i.e. Photos not loading etc , I decided to email Gerry.

I basically told him that everyone is getting annoyed at the constant problem with photos and the general issues we have. That people are leaving the site because of this and that’s such a shame. And would he just let us know what is happening, if anything

Today I got the following email:

 Hi Jackie,

Many thanks for your email.

Work is being carried out on Garden.ie at the moment, and its current state is far from good. Its technology has been superceded.

We expect to be in a better position within a few weeks, the work is much greater than anticipated.

Best regards,

Gerry

Not sure if that’s going to help the situation or not but I suppose we wait and see if anything changes who knows it might!!

So that’s the update so far!

In this highly regulated time I have discovered, with the help of a local farmer, that Agroxone used at a rate of 160 ml in a sixteen litre knapsack sprayer, (100/1) has killed off the dreaded mares tails. In the information leaflet for Agroxone it is one of the described uses of this chemical. I have also used it for the control of dandelions, plantain, creeping buttercup, daisies and even clover in lawns. But it is important to protect yourself when using it and that means eye protection, gloves and a breathing mask. This is my first year to use it on mares tails and it has burned this years growth completely. I will watch now to see if growth returns later in the year and to see to what extent growth resumes next year. It is the first treatment I have used that gave me any satisfaction.

Sorry we have not been here for a while…we have had a few difficult months, both our Mums passed away since I was last here …..my Mum went into hospital with chest infection on 24th April and due to other complications she passed on the 11th May ..it was a terrible shock to us all cause she had been improving but was not strong enough in the end…we were starting to get back to some normality in June and went to Chicago on holiday on the 11th and just over a week of the holiday we got a phone call to say Graham’s Mum had passed so normality went out the window again…….It has been difficult, but we are grateful we had them for so long as lots of families do not…

We had something to celebrate yesterday when we attended Jacinta & Steve’s wedding…it was a great day from start to finish (3am for us) Jacinta looked stunning as did Steve.. wonderful company,Lovely food ,plenty of drink…..great music and dancing …it was just what the Dr ordered after all the sadness…..Thanks Jacinta and Steve….

We continue to add to the garden.. I am pleased with how it is looking right now despite the wind and rain…..I will do an Album as soon as I get out and take some photos…….Kate

Hi everyone.

Just a quick journal to confirm I haven’t gone away. Health wise all is good and prognosis could not be better. Sadly my old head is in a different place altogether. I’ve no get up and go, the old mojo is lost at the moment. All this is quite normal, I’ve been told, but I’m not liking it at all.

I’d like to say thanks to you all who contacted me in last few days. Thanks for taking the time and having the interest it did me the world of good.

be assured….

Fran the Man hasn’t gone away, he’s just otherwise occupied at the moment.

Thanks again to you all.

Hi

Looking for some advice from you experts out there, when is the right time to prune gooseberry bushes

Well the storm is going so it’s back to the garden, this year my wife who is’nt a gardener baught me an addvert from a magazen about Volcanic rock dust so I sent for some, the results are unbeliveable.

I had Cauliflowers like dinner plates, Peas in March, and carrots big enough for two per carrot all grown in my polytunnel. This Dust is not a fertilizer but contains all the trace elements plus sulphur we feed are plants but not our soil, I recomend a trial.

Happy Gardening

Am just sitting here thinking of the storm we’ve just been through. And wondering which plant in my garden is the best plant/tree I have.

Not the prettiest or biggest but the best ‘worker’ with the least minding on it.. The one who lifts your sprit when you see it and makes you smile as you pass it. You probably think Im mad but it is a question thats not often asked, or is it?

I may walk around in the morning and find the one here as I can’t pinpoint just one as I type this.

Maybe I’ll do a top ten and try and whittle it down..

Are there any gardens open to the public during the winter?

Always wondered if there were ‘winter gardens’ for days out during the colder months. So much is published about other seasons but I never seem to see anything spotlighting the winter months. I realise its the dormant season but lots of plants and shrubs look amazing on a cold clear day.

Isn’t October so mild and we have had such beautiful days too.

It’s been a while since I posted ( oh my goodness) as a lot going on here and I’ve been lacking in the journal dept!! But I have been commenting on others.

So Autumn is definitely here and the garden is full of leaves. Although the difference is amazing since that massive tree was taken down last Spring from the Council. I have little or no leaves at the side nor the front garden. It’s fantastic. Back garden is the usual but not as bad either. So that’s great.

Lots still flowering in the garden for the end of October. Between Ophelia and Brian we have had little or no damage. The odd plant blown over, lost a few fronds off the Tree Fern but overall thankful that it wasn’t worse.

Still lots of Dahlia flowering and this D. Creme de Caisse is looking great.

Geranium Rozanne has taken on a new lease of life after I cut back lots of its foliage and I also found a lovely Hellebore underneath. Love these surprises

Last photo are my Penstemon which are also flowering away and looking so healthy too.

Its great to see so much colour going on as it certainly makes these dark Oct/Nov months feel like they go by quicker. I don’t like these 2 months at all. So looking forward to getting them out of the way!!

Cant seem to upload photos now grrrrr says some sort of ‘internal error’. Anyone else have this problem 🙁

These pictures were taken in our old house, we moved out in Dec 2012 to a house that has a garden about 6 times the size of this one. I absolutely LOVED this garden. It was the size of a stamp but it had everything in it. I loved all the colour. I love hanging baskets, lots of colour in the garden. I would grow anything and get great enjoyment from it. It was so compact too. We had two pergola’s…..I had lots of different clematis growing up them. I love Clematis Montana Rubens…as its a wonderful clematis for coverage and it grows so fast. I will have to get some for my new garden. Its a daunting prospect trying to figure out what to do and I worry I wont get the same pleasure that I did with my old compact little garden. But time will tell!
