Month: August 2018

Quite a while since I entered anything. Tomatoes are turning from green to red every day. I was at the Country Market on Friday and sold some Pelargoniums. I didn’t have enough tomatoes to sell but there was a big change yesterday. I have been picking about one pound of same each day. Most of them are in the greenhouse but some also outside. both the large ones, Alicante and the cherry type called Red Cherry. The Country Market is now closed for two weeks. I have been eating some and gave away one pound. What will I do in the meantime.
The Pelargoniums were very big and some months ago, I started taking cuttings, so between the plants in the greenhouse and in pots outside together with those planted on pots at the front of the house and those sold at the Country Market, I have surely 50 well rooted. Now Gerry tells us that this is the time to take cuttings or heels but I have found that it has worked since April, take the cuttings, leave them to dry for a day, pot them and no need to put plastic bags over them. I lifted a few Geraniums to day and potted them.
The lawn is beginning to turn green again but it will take some tome before it requires mowing again. We had some lovely warm and sunny days. Yesterday was great but I was inside to watch the games, in particular the hurling semifinal replay, Galway V Clare. I felt sorry for the Banner County that they failed to make it a draw again.

I especially like the agapanthus as it’s such a dark blue.
Every year I get verbascums re-seed in my cottage garden. I love this one as the colour is unusual!!

Drought tolerant Agapanthus doing well

Some plants have done really well dispite the drought. Everything has perked up after the couple of days of rain.
It’s been a tough year hasn’t it ? I’ve found the weather a challenge but many plants have managed to put on a show. The two new Dahlia beds are coming into flower now and it was a mixed bag as the tubers were a complete mix so to speak . Happy enough with the colors . I need more yellows generally in the flower beds .  Very happy with the Yellow Helianthus I grew from seed this year . Lovely bright yellow and dark center’s contrast nicely with the orange Pom Pom dahlia.
Spotted him from the kitchen window and for once I managed to get a few shots before he flew away. Not surprising that Buddleia is called butterfly bush!
