Gardens Open

It takes a generous person to open their garden to the public for the enjoyment of others. Here Garden.ie lists about 300 gardens open for visiting, some year-round, others by appointment, and be sure to phone ahead.

Coolwater Gardens, on half an acre, are quite unlike any other gardens that you may see.

The West Garden is planted on top of Red Sandstone pavement (no lawns or borders) and incorporates woodland areas, a limestone dolmen, large circular alpine troughs, Japanese maple bed, a coombe, juniper escarpment, ponds, etc.

Connecting to the Water Garden are a large number of troughs containing alpines.

The tropical-looking Water Garden is encircled by bamboo groves, palms, a covered arid bed with agaves somehow managing to look perfectly natural alongside the water, a fern dell and another woodland section. The waterside patios have more troughs, some with alpines planted directly into Tufa
